warriors of light and darkness
For the first 70 levels of the game, each playable job has its own storyline to play through, which unlocks various skills and provides lore about that particular job. By the time Shadowbringers rolled around, there were seventeen distinct jobs, making this somewhat untenable for the developers to keep up with each expansion. You’re also on a completely different world in Shadowbringers, so it didn’t make a lot of sense to go back home every two levels to learn a new skill.
Enter role quests. Instead of having quests for each job, instead there were jobs for each role — tank, healer, physical DPS, and magical DPS. How they tied it into Shadowbringers’s plot was what made it interesting, though: each role quest centers around one of Ardbert’s old party members, each of whom has become an incredibly powerful sin eater called a Cardinal Virtue.
Ardbert only appears in these quests during flashbacks, but each one helps expand the story of Norvrandt’s Warriors of Light and their fateful encounter with the Shadowkeeper, which led their world to its eventual ruin.
