branden / dikaiosyne

This role quest follows Branden, the paladin of Ardbert’s party. Truth be told, there’s very little to do with Ardbert himself in this one; he’s present in the flashbacks, but doesn’t have a strong role.

The present-day storyline follows Granson, a hume with a terribly unoriginal past of My Wife Died And I’m Not Over It. Between the two of you, you track Dikaiosyne, Branden’s Lightwarden form, eventually ending up in Il Mheg. There, you meet a Nu Mou called Sul Oul, who had known Branden personally.

Through Echo visions, you learn that Branden was a knight of Voeburt, and attended its princess, Sauldia. Voeburt was stricken with a rash of mysterious curses that transformed citizens into monsters, and Sauldia sought to learn the truth of it for herself, with Branden to protect her. Unfortunately, he was inexperienced, and couldn’t keep her safe, and thus was removed from his position.

At some point after that, Branden returns to Voeburt as one of Ardbert’s companions. The curse has not abated, and unfortunately, their investigation proves that it’s an inside job, orchestrated by the court mage. A roleplaying duty ensues with the player taking the role of Branden, who has to fight off the court mage with Ardbert and the other Warriors of Light at his side. Though they defeat the court mage, Sauldia is likewise stricken by the curse, and Branden has to cut her down.

Back in the present day, Granson learns to process his Dead Wife Angst and manages to take down Dikaiosyne alongside you. Branden likewise manages to let go of his lingering feelings for Sauldia, and fades away.

Frankly, this is probably my least favorite role quest in Shadowbringers. Dead Wife Angst is an overused, tiresome trope, yet it’s the thing that connects Granson with Branden and thus ties the entire storyline together. We learn almost nothing about the Warriors of Light, though the insight into Voeburt is nice, I suppose.

But mostly, this is a very forgettable questline that does little to illuminate these characters.
